QUOTE OF THE DAY

“People are constantly attacking my hair. I don’t see you coming to my defense” – Donald Trump. Over the weekend at an event in Iowa, the GOP presidential candidate suggested people only call Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) a war hero “because he was captured” in Vietnam. Trump and his hair aren’t apologizing.

THINGS THAT HAD A ROUGH WEEKEND

COLUMBIA, SC

THE STORY

Over the weekend, the Ku Klux Klan and an African-American group held competing rallies at South Carolina’s Statehouse. It didn’t go well.

GIMME SOME BACKGROUND.

Last month, nine people were shot and killed at a historic black church in Charleston, SC. Photos surfaced of the white suspect, who is now in custody, posing with the Confederate flag. That sparked a national debate about whether symbols of the South’s Confederate past, like the flag, should still be featured. South Carolina opted to take the flag down . Turns out, the KKK isn’t in favor of that decision.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Over the weekend, the white supremacist group protested the flag’s removal – at the same time, groups with ties to the Black Panther Party protested racial inequality in the US. After hours of screaming at each other and some physical fights, a handful of people were arrested.

After last month’s shooting in Charleston, a lot of the country is ready to say ‘bye’ to the Confederate flag. But this weekend was a reminder that not everybody is on board — and the debate goes on.

CHATTANOOGA, TN

THE STORY

Last week, a gunman opened fire at two military centers in Chattanooga, TN, killing four Marines. The gunman was also killed. Over the weekend, a  a fifth service member died from his injuries.

WHO DID IT?

A Kuwait-born Muslim man and naturalized US citizen. His family said he had a history of depression and drug and alcohol abuseHe’s being investigated for potential terrorist ties, and the authorities are looking into a trip he took to Jordan last year.

The motive behind this shooting is unclear. But since the rise of ISIS, people have been on high alert for homegrown terrorism in Western countries.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Bill Cosby. Over the weekend, the New York Times published the transcript of a decade-old testimony that the comedian gave in response to sexual assault allegations against him. In the 2000s, a woman accused Cosby of drugging and molesting her. In the testimony, he says that he never gave women drugs without their knowledge, and that he handed out quaaludes (think: “Wolf of Wall Street” ) just like “a person would say have a drink.” Cosby claimed to be good at reading people. He also said he paid off women to keep his wife in the dark. Dozens of women have come forward with claims that Cosby drugged and raped them. He’s never been charged in relation to any of these accusations.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU RESCHEDULE ROOFTOP DRINKS BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER...

Rain check. The British Open can relate. The golf tournament’s final round was postponed until today because of serious winds. And that wasn’t the only surprise. Amateur Paul Dunne is tied for the lead. If he wins, that would be the first time an amateur’s won the tournament in 85 years. It would also be a big buzzkill for Jordan Spieth, golf’s new golden boy who’s been kicking putt all year.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HEAR THE US AND CUBA OFFICIALLY REOPEN EMBASSIES TODAY

Back in business. So is Greece. Today, banks reopen in the country after being closed for three weeks. Greece has had some problems balancing its checkbook. There was that time late last month when it missed the deadline to repay creditors who bailed it out. Then that time when Greece voted ‘no’ to the terms of another bailout deal. Then that time when it said ‘psych, we actually need money,’ and said it wanted a bailout deal. Now, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is saying she’s open to being flexible with Greece’s new payment plan. Baby steps.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WONDERING…

How a 21-year-old man ended up dead in Demi Moore’s pool over the weekend. She and her kids weren’t home at the time. Authorities are looking into what happened.

WHAT TO SAY WHILE IN THE OCEAN...

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming. Or don’t. Over the weekend, a surf competition in South Africa was canceled after this happened

THING TO KNOW

Whip/Nae Nae: The song and dance that’s kinda like the new Soulja Boy. It’s from a video by Atlanta rapper Silento. Then NBA star Steph Curry’s daughter did it. The rest is viral history.
