Skimm’d over “The Bachelorette” finale
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“This is a grave affair, one which resonates like a symbol of the suppression of our most precious democratic values” – French citizens fighting for freedom and nudity, after hearing a nude beach was closed due to a visit from the Saudi royals.

THINGS HAVING A ROUGH TIME

CHINA

THE STORY

Yesterday, China had a case of the Mondays. The country’s stock market had its worst day in years.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

Earlier this year, the Chinese stock market was riding high. Earlier this summer, it crashed. After a downturn in prices, mom and pop investors didn’t have the cash to pay back lenders. That caused a major market selloff. The government swooped in and pumped money into the market to give it a boost. That kinda worked...until yesterday, when investors started to bite their nails again. Global markets  didn’t take the news well.

Yesterday’s news was a wake-up call that the relatively stable markets over the past few weeks aren’t as stable as everyone thought. China’s economy has major influence beyond its borders, meaning long-term instability could signal financial chaos for global markets.

TURKEY

THE STORY

Yesterday, Turkey and the US announced they have a plan to kick out ISIS along the Syria-Turkey border.

WAIT, BACK UP.

For years, Turkey has been freaking out about Syrian refugees crossing its border with Syria, in order to flee the country’s brutal civil war. But lately, Turkey’s also had ISIS to deal with. So last week, Turkey finally decided to get on board with the US-led coalition against the group.

NOW WHAT?

Yesterday, the US and Turkey said they’re planning to hit ISIS with airstrikes, while moderate Syrian rebels fight the group on the ground. This would create a “safe zone” that Syrian refugees can go back home to. But it’s a liiiiittle more complicated than it sounds.

WHY’S THAT?

Those moderate Syrian rebels that the plan hinges on? They basically don’t exist. And haven’t exactly been at the forefront of the fight against ISIS. The Kurds (semi-autonomous ethnic group) are the only group that’s been able to successfully fight off ISIS. But Turkey and the Kurds hate each other. The Kurds say they’ve also been  targeted by Turkish warplanes since the country joined Team No More ISIS last week.

As with all things in the Mideast – and especially in Syria – this is a hot mess.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR GRANDPA FINALLY UPGRADES TO A SMARTPHONE...

Slow clap. Yesterday, the Boy Scouts of America looked at the calendar, realized it’s 2015, and voted to end the organization’s ban on openly gay adult leaders. This has been a long time coming, but yesterday made it official.  The catch? Church-sponsored Scout units can say ‘no thanks’ to hiring gay leaders based on religious reasons. Still, the Mormon Church - the biggest sponsor of Scout units - said it now needs to rethink its whole relationship to the Scouts.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HAVE A RECURRING NIGHTMARE…

Bad deja-vu. South Sudan can relate. Yesterday, President Obama was in Ethiopia talking to African leaders about how to stop the violence in South Sudan. Refresher: just four years ago, South Sudan became the world’s newest country when it broke free from Sudan. Cue the international champagne popping, with Obama calling it a good thing for democracy in Africa. So much for that. For more than a year,  the country’s been in a civil war, with Sudan-backed rebels fighting against the South Sudanese government. Yesterday, Obama said the US could hit both sides with sanctions if they can’t make peace happen.

WHAT TO SAY ABOUT YOUR COMPANY’S STRICT SUMMER FRIDAY POLICY...

Balls. The NFL reportedly has new procedures  for game balls. That’s because of Deflategate, aka that time the New England Patriots were accused of intentionally deflating game footballs to make them easier to grip. Now, NFL teams will reportedly have to implement some ‘turn your head and cough’ tests. Think: use more footballs, switch them out at halftime, and do random ball checks to make sure they’re in good shape. Earlier this year, Patriots QB Tom Brady was suspended for four games for the alleged shrinkage. He’s appealing the decision. In other NFL updates, the Arizona Cardinals hired the League’s first female coach yesterday. She’ll be working as a preseason intern coach. Clear eyes, full hearts, breaking news.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU LIKE YOUR ROOMMATE’S SHOES…

Mine. Yesterday, Israeli drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical said ‘I want’ to Allergan’s generic drug business. And it wants it for $40.5 billion. Teva is the world’s largest generic drug maker, and Allergan is one of its top competitors. Once Allergan’s free of its generic drug biz, it can focus more on branded drugs - it already owns Botox, which makes its profits smile (sans wrinkles). Dealmaking has been trendy in the drug industry for years, with companies pairing up to strengthen their positions in the market.
