Skimm’d after “True Detective”
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I want to be your neighbor” — Pope Francis speaking to a crowd of about a million people in one of Paraguay’s poorest neighborhoods. It was the last stop on his South America trip, aimed at speaking out against poverty. Job done.

THINGS PLAYING 'DEAL OR NO DEAL'

GREECE

THE STORY

Today, Greece and European lenders reached a deal to keep the country from a eurozone ‘Grexit.’

GIMME THE DEETS.

You might have heard that Greece is having a hard time paying back its international sugar daddies. Last month, it missed a payment to its creditors. Last week, the country voted ‘no’ to another bailout deal, since the terms included new harsh austerity measures (think: big tax hikes, big pension cuts). Now, Greece’s leaders have decided ‘harsh’ is better than being forced out of the eurozone. The country has until Wednesday to pass new austerity measures. And in exchange, European lenders will write a check to keep Greece afloat.

This is the third bailout in five years for Greece. It isn’t the deal the country wanted, but with Greek banks days away from running out of cash, it doesn’t have much of a choice.

IRAN

THE STORY

After years of talking it out, Iran and the US are expected to announce a nuclear agreement as early as today. Hold the applause.

GIMME THE DEETS.

The goal for the US and five other world powers is to make sure Iran doesn’t make a nuclear weapon. Iran – which says, ‘wasn’t planning on it anyway’ – wants crippling economic sanctions to be lifted. Those sanctions were punishment from the US and friends, aimed at curbing the nuclear program. Yesterday, negotiators made a big announcement: they might be close to making a deal. Or they might not. Glad that’s settled.

Signing a deal would signal an international exhale. But there are still a few hurdles to jump. Once there is an actual agreement, Congress still has to give it the OK…which should be drama free as always.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE COFFEE PLACE RUNS OUT OF COFFEE BEANS...

You had one job. That’s what Mexico’s saying after the country’s top drug lord escaped from a maximum-security prison over the weekend. Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is head of a major cartel known for its use of underground tunnels to smuggle drugs across the US-Mexico border. That’s fitting, since El Chapo escaped via a small opening in his shower cell to a mile-long tunnel. Mexican officials have a sneaking suspicion someone at the prison may have been in on this one – especially since this isn’t the first time El Chapo has hatched an escape. He broke free from another Mexican prison in 2001, with the help of some prison guard friends. He was on the run until officials caught up with him last year. At the time, it was a big win for Mexico’s tough-on-drugs president, who promised El Chapo would never escape again. Whoops.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THIS YEAR’S BEACH RENTAL LOOKS THE SAME AS LAST YEAR’S...

Deja-vu. Yesterday, Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer to win Wimbledon. Again. This means that the two – the Bayside and Valley High rivalry of tennis – are tied with 20 wins against each other. Federer’s 33, aka old in tennis terms, so fans were hoping he could pull this one through. Who’s not feeling her age? Serena Williams. On Saturday, the 33-year-old beat Spanish player Garbine Muguruza to win the top trophy, and a Serena Slam. Now, ball’s in her court to win the US Open, which would make her the first to win all four majors in one year since Steffi Graf in the 80s.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND REACHES HER CROWD-FUNDING GOAL...

Ask and you shall receive. After weeks of protesting from users, Reddit’s interim CEO Ellen Pao resigned on Friday. Many users thought the site had gotten too censored since Pao took the job. They also weren’t pleased that Reddit fired a popular employee. Cue more than 200,000 signatures on a petition to send Pao packing. In a letter announcing her resignation, Pao blamed her exit on a disagreement with the site’s board. This is the same Ellen Pao who lost a gender discrimination lawsuit against her former Silicon Valley venture capital employer earlier this year. #ToughYear.

THING TO KNOW

Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI): Officially throwing his hat in the 2016 ring today. But Twitter already knew that. Walker’s the one who caused weeks of protests in 2011 over bargaining privileges for unions. That led to a recall vote, which he won. It also won him the top spot in lots of conservative hearts.
