QUOTE OF THE DAY

“She’s dominating the game” – Serena Williams’s very observant coach. Yesterday, Williams beat Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon. Next stop, the finals. And maybe a “Serena Slam.” NBD.

THINGS BEING TAKEN DOWN

THE CONFEDERATE FLAG

THE STORY

Today, South Carolina is taking the Confederate flag down from its capitol grounds. For good.

TELL ME MORE.

The Confederate flag has flown at the state capitol for more than 50 years, ever since the state put it up to protest the civil rights movement. Supporters – who say the flag symbolizes Southern heritage – have always said let it fly. A lot of other people have said….really? But then last month, nine black people were shot and killed at a historic black church in Charleston. Photos later surfaced of the white suspect posing with the Confederate flag.  And the rest of the country said, ‘are you kidding me with that flag, South Carolina?’ Cue SC’s gov. saying the flag has to go, followed by major companies dropping their Confederate flag merch. Insert a state lawmaker (who counts the Confederate president as her ancestor) giving this speech. Now, it’s coming down.

In the wake of last month’s tragedy, the removal of the flag signals a turning point for traditional symbols of the South’s Confederate past.

THE *: Meanwhile, the KKK is taking Georgia to court. The white supremacist group can’t seem to understand why the state would deny its request to ‘Adopt-A-Highway.’

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

THE STORY

Yesterday, the government hinted that more than 21 million Americans should probably check their bank statements. ‘Cause they got hacked.

WHY DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Because we’ve known about the hack for a while, but didn’t know how bad it was. About a month ago, the gov’s HR department said ‘we got hacked,’ and the info of about four million current and former employees was compromised. Then it came out that the hack might have actually affected the info of about 18 million employees…and maybe their relatives. Yesterday, the gov. reassured everyone by saying, ‘that’s mostly true.’ Except it affected more than 21 million people.

The US is blaming China in what looks like one of the biggest ever cyberattacks on a government agency. China is saying ‘who, me?’ The fact that the real scope of the hack is just coming out is raising some eyebrows.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU TEXT ‘EN ROUTE’ WHEN YOU JUST GOT OUT OF THE SHOWER...

US Sec. of State John Kerry can relate. For months, the US has hinted that it’s close to a nuclear deal with Iran. Then last week, the two sides missed the deadline they’d set for themselves to make it happen. So they set another one for yesterday. And missed it again. Captain Urgency Kerry said, “we will not rush and we will not be rushed.”  The two sides disagree on a few minor things like whether an arms embargo on Iran should be lifted as part of the deal. Plus, Iran’s always maintained it wants nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, while everyone else has said ‘on opposite day.’ Missing the latest deadline means that Congress gets a longer time to review the deal. And talk about how much they hate it. Bad news for President Obama, who would really like this deal in the bag before he leaves office. Can’t get enough? We Skimm’d it for you.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND FORGETS TO PACK MASCARA FOR YOUR WEEKEND TRIP...

‘Girl, you don’t need makeup.’ Procter & Gamble agrees. Yesterday, P&G - which owns labels like Crest, Clairol, and Covergirl — sold some of its beauty brands to Coty in a deal valued at $15 billion. Coty’s a beauty company that already owns Rimmel cosmetics and Calvin Klein perfume, among others. This comes as P&G’s been parting ways with other brands too. Last year, it sold Duracell to Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway. P&G wants to focus on its core business, selling exciting stuff like soap and diapers. A literally clean slate.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE GPS STARTS WORKING AGAIN...

This is slightly reassuring. Just like what happened in China and Greece yesterday. Recent financial crises in both countries have caused heavy breathing from international markets. But yesterday, things started looking up. In China, stock prices had their biggest gain in six years. That’s thanks to things the Chinese government has been doing to keep markets afloat. Meanwhile, Greece is still broke but it might be on its way to being a little less broke. Yesterday, it brought a new bailout proposal to the table that has some of the austerity measures (think: tax hikes) its creditors want. It has big-deal meetings with European leaders this weekend that could decide whether it gets to stay in the eurozone. Still Greek to you? Skimm it here

It’s still perfect. And so are her kids.
