QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Foundation b*tch” — How you refer to Queen Elizabeth’s favorite corgi, according to Vanity Fair. It’s a DNA-gifted dog used to breed a line of bad b*tches.

TURKEY DOESN'T PLAY CHICKEN

THE STORY

Yesterday, Turkey called for an emergency meeting with its NATO friends to talk about security threats. So much for a relaxing weekend.

GIVE ME A REFRESHER.

Turkey’s dealing with two big issues. 1. Since the 80s, Turkish Kurds (hint: semi-autonomous ethnic group) have been fighting to be more independent from the country. In 2013, the two sides hugged it out with a cease-fire. Which worked...until recently. 2. Turkey is also dealing with a little thing called ISIS. The group is being blamed for a suicide bombing that killed at least 30 people in a town near the Turkey-Syria border last week.

SO WHAT’S TURKEY DOING ABOUT ALL THIS?

On Friday, sh*t hit the fan with both issues. Turkey launched airstrikes against Kurds in northern Iraq. Cue the Kurds allegedly retaliating with a car bomb yesterday that killed two Turkish soldiers. Also on Friday, Turkey launched airstrikes against ISIS in Syria.

Turkey has been relatively stable recently. But it’s looking like that could be changing. Not good, since Turkey is a US ally in an area where friends are hard to come by.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SADDENED BY…

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SEND AN EMAIL TOO QUICKLY...

Disregard. Last week, the New York Times reported - and a lot of other places (including us) picked up — that the Justice Department was asked to open a criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s inbox habits. Specifically, the original article said that two inspectors general asked the Justice Department to investigate whether Hillz mishandled government info by using her personal email account while sec. of state. The Justice Department hasn’t decided if it’s investigating. But over the weekend, the NYT issued  some corrections. Turns out it wouldn’t have been a criminal probe into Clinton, herself, just a probe into whether classified info was compromised. On Friday, Hillz responded, saying “maybe the heat is getting to everybody.” Burn.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU’RE RE-ADJUSTING FROM A WEEKEND AWAY...

President Obama can relate. Over the weekend, he took a trip to Kenya - his first visit as prez to the place where his dad was born. He talked about how he’s proud of his Kenyan heritage. He also said the US will stand by Kenya in its fight against Al-Shabab - the Islamic terror group that killed nearly 150 people at a college there earlier this year. The visit was going great until Obama brought up the rainbow-colored elephant in the room, aka gay rights . In Kenya, gay sex is a crime. Obama said ‘you give love a bad name,’ and it’s wrong to discriminate. Kenya’s president didn’t appreciate that.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO BIKES TO THE OFFICE...

Pulling a Froome. Yesterday, British cyclist Chris Froome won the Tour de France. Again. He’s now the first Brit to win twice. But the race wasn’t all smooth riding. Yesterday, French police opened fire on a car that smashed through the race’s security barriers. Cue the manhunt. The suspects haven’t been caught yet. Sacre bleu.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND USES YOUR JOKE ON THE GROUP THREAD...

Imitation is the sincerest form of copyright infringement. Twitter agrees – and is cracking down on joke-stealing

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

NYMag’s cover girls — 35 women who have accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault. Cosby has denied the allegations and has never been formally charged.

SKIMM'R OF THE WEEK

Skimm’bassador Nancy Lublin (New York, NY): Nancy realized that many would rather type out their issues than talk on the phone. So she founded Crisis Text Line, a hotline that lets people text about what’s bothering them. Trained counselors answer about 24,000 texts a day.
