THINGS THAT ARE SHAKING ON IT

IRAN

THE STORY

After lots of international angina, years of talks, and more than two weeks of all-nighters, diplomats announced this morning that Iran and the US and friends have a nuclear agreement.

REALLY?

Really. Details aren’t out until after a final espresso toast between both sides later this AM. This deal will lift sanctions against Iran in exchange for limits to its nuclear program. Which Iran has always said is peaceful, and everyone else has said ‘ummm, not so sure.’ The final sticking points? Whether or not to lift an arms embargo on Iran. Iran said ‘yes please,’ everyone else again said ‘ummm, not so sure.’ The country reportedly agreed to continue with the embargo for up to five more years.

The deal’s a major foreign policy win for the US and a major check off Obama’s ‘before I leave office’ to-do list. But it’s expected to face opposition from the Republican-led Congress, many of whom think it doesn’t go far enough to limit Iran’s nuclear program. And guess who still has to review the deal? Yup, Congress.

GREECE

THE STORY

After months of talks, almost getting kicked out of the eurozone, and a lot of international nail-biting, Greece finally reached a bailout deal with its creditors. Now, Greece’s PM just has to convince his party to sign off on it. Easier said than done.

WHY’S THAT?

Because earlier this year, this party was elected on the promise that it would get rid of austerity (cough, major budget cuts and tax hikes, cough). Now, it’s being asked to accept a deal with more austerity. Not the same thing. It doesn’t help that Greeks already voted ‘no’ to a deal last week because they didn’t want the austerity that came with it.  Greece’s PM thought he could leverage that ‘no’ vote to get a better deal. Europe thought differently. And now the country is stuck with an even harsher deal.

Greece and its creditors finally agreed on something. Opa. But the prime minister is now coming back to the very people who elected him with austerity measures he promised to get rid of. No opa. And a lot of angry Greeks.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET A SUMMER FRIDAY...

Feel like a free man. Yesterday, President Obama cut short the prison sentences of 46 non-violent drug offenders. Most of them are in prison for selling cocaine. Paging Alex Vause. Many are serving sentences of at least 20 years – and some even serving life in prison – under outdated sentencing guidelines. Yesterday, Obama said the punishments “didn’t fit the crime,” and that the inmates would be out of jail later this year. The move is a part of Obama’s push to overhaul the criminal justice system. Heads up: you’ll be hearing more about this all week. On Thursday, he’ll become the first US president to visit a federal prison.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR OFFICE IS TAKING NEW HEAD SHOTS...

Ready for my closeup. Just like Pluto. Today, a NASA spacecraft called New Horizons is going to have an “encounter” with Pluto – and send back pics to some very, VERY excited Earthlings at home. This will be the first time a spacecraft has flown by the dwarf planet, and the mission’s scientists have been waiting more than nine years for it to happen. No pressure. Yesterday, the spacecraft sent back some teaser photos, and new data – turns out, Pluto is a little fuller figured than everybody thought. Sadly, it’s probably still not wide enough to lose the “dwarf” qualifier and rejoin the big boys of the solar system.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE CHANGE IN YOUR WALLET...

50 cents is basically broke. Actually, though. Yesterday, rapper 50 Cent said ‘I won’t take you to the candy shop, because I’m bankrupt.’ He filed for bankruptcy  with his assets and debts ranging from $10 - $50 million. So he has a lot of stuff, but he also owes a lot of money. This is the same guy who became a multi-millionaire singing about your birthday and investing in Vitamin Water. Fiddy’s bankruptcy announcement comes days after a jury ruled that he has to pay $5 million to a woman who sued him for posting a sex tape of her. So there’s that.
