QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It’s the right thing to do” – A South Carolina state senator on why the Confederate flag should be removed from the capitol. The Senate agreed. Now, it goes to the House to decide whether or not the flag will rise again.

THINGS GOING UP ON A TUESDAY

IRAN

THE STORY

After years of back and forth, the US and friends are reportedly kinda-sorta close to reaching a nuclear deal with Iran. Just in time for tonight’s deadline.

GIMME SOME BACKGROUND.

The US plus six other world powers have been trying to get Iran to ease up on its nuclear program. Iran hasn’t been so into that idea. So the international community has hit the country with rounds of sanctions that have crippled its economy. Things have gotten bad enough that Iran thought it might be time to make a deal.

SO WHAT NOW?

Still no deal. The two sides disagree on things like whether Iran’s arms embargo should be lifted (Iran is pro, everyone else is against). And whether international inspectors should be allowed into Iranian military sites (everyone else is pro, Iran is against). They also disagree on whether or not Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons (Iran says ‘no, just innocent things like electricity‘, everyone else says ‘don’t believe you’).

‘Deadline’ has been a loose term in the past. But if the two sides actually manage to get something signed, Congress gets a turn to give it a read. And the international community gets a turn to sleep easier…for a bit.

THE *: Can’t get enough Iran? There’s a Skimm guide for that.

GREECE

THE STORY

Greek banks are about to run out of cash. Yesterday, the European Central Bank said it would maintain — but not expand — emergency funding for the country. Hold the ‘opa.’

REMIND ME HOW BAD THIS IS…

Last week, Greece’s eurozone bailout program expired. But this week, Greek voters said ‘hell no’ to a new bailout offer from its international creditors. Greeks don’t want any additional austerity measures (tax hikes, pension cuts) that come with bailout checks. Cue European leaders having an emergency meeting today. They say Greece better shape up and send them a serious new bailout plan (hint: with additional austerity attached), or learn the word “Grexit.”

theSKIMM

A country might be bounced out of the eurozone club for the first time. No one knows what that would mean – but Europe is a major player in the global economy. And the global economy hates uncertainty. Yesterday, stocks around the world were down on the big, fat, Greek news.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND ASKS WHEN “THE COSBY SHOW” RERUNS WILL BE BACK…

Let’s go with never. Yesterday, the AP obtained docs from a 2005 sexual abuse lawsuit where Bill Cosby admitted to drugging at least one woman and then having sex with herAlso in the docs, he copped to buying quaaludes (think: “Wolf of Wall Street”) with the purpose of giving them to women. And this isn’t even one of the other cases against Cosby you’ve recently heard about. More than two dozen women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual misconduct. He’s never been criminally charged, and has denied wrongdoing in the past.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR INTERNS START PARTYING TOGETHER…

This has taken on a life of its own. Just like Reddit. More than 150,000 Reddit users have signed a petition for interim CEO Ellen Pao to step down. They think that the site’s been too censored since Pao got the top job. It didn’t help that she recently fired the employee responsible for AMAs — popular forums where people can ask everyone from President Obama to Martha Stewart “anything.” Spoiler: Martha likes truffle oil about as much as Reddit users like Pao right now. Yesterday, Pao apologized and said Reddit “screwed up” and needs to communicate better. This isn’t her first time in the tech spotlight. Earlier this year, she lost a gender discrimination lawsuit against her former Silicon Valley venture capital employer.

WHAT TO SAY WHILE LOOKING FOR A MOVIE…

Did you hear about Jerry Weintraub? The big-time producer died yesterday at age 77. He worked with pretty much everyone in Hollywood. You can thank him for producing “Karate Kid” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” movies that never end. He also worked with Frank Sinatra and Elvis. And was tight with everyone from George Clooney to former prez George H.W. Bush — who teased Weintraub for being a “black-belt name dropper.” If you got it, flaunt it.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR MOM USES THE EGGPLANT EMOJI…

Overruling you here. Yesterday, a conviction against a former Goldman Sachs programmer was overturned. This is the same guy you read about in Vanity Fair two years ago. Goldman says he committed corporate espionage. This court said not so much. In 2009, he was arrested and spent about a year in prison for allegedly stealing Goldman’s high-frequency trading code. High-frequency trading: the way firms make orders in literally less time than it takes you to blink. The ex-programmer said it was open-source code — or ‘fair game’ in programmer speak. Six years and two overturned convictions later, it looks like he’s finally in the clear.

WHAT TO SAY WHILE GETTING YOUR AM COFFEE…

Is it just me or is this getting more expensive? Hint: it’s not just you.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU’RE HAVING A TOUGH DAY…

Let the lord be with you. Unless your name is Kourtney
