QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The pile officially melted” — The mayor of Boston sharing the good news yesterday that the last of the snow from the city’s epic winter is finally gone. Merry Chrismukkah in July.

KIND OF A BIG DEAL

THE STORY

After more than a decade of talking it out, the US and friends and Iran shook on a BFNuclearD.

WHAT’S IN THE DEAL?

For the US and friends, it’s aimed at stopping Iran from building a nuclear weapon. For Iran, it’s aimed at lifting sanctions that have done serious damage to its economy. The deets? Iran promised to limit its nuclear activities for 10 years. Read: anything that could make a nuclear weapon. And it won’t be able to trade or sell weapons for a few years. In exchange, it gets to say buh-bye to those sanctions.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

That politics in the Middle East could be transformed. That the US and Iran are now a little friendlier than before. That Iran’s economy, which was sidelined because of sanctions, could now be a major international player. That Iran could now have more resources to help in the fight against ISIS.

ANYONE OPPOSED?

Yes. Israel and Republicans aren’t popping champagne. They think the deal goes too easy on Iran.

The fact that the deal happened on Obama’s watch is a big gold star for his otherwise touch-and-go foreign policy record. But it could be a tough sell in Congress, where the deal still has to be approved. Obama’s promised to veto any attempt that blocks the deal. Let the showdown begin.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Oskar Groening. Today, the 94-year-old known as the “accountant of Auschwitz” was convicted on 300,000 counts of accessory to murder, and sentenced to four years in prison. Groening got that nickname for his time as a Nazi guard and bookkeeper at the concentration camp in the 1940s. Even though Groening admitted to working there, his defense argued that he hadn’t committed any of the crimes himself. The judges in the case disagreed, saying that Groening’s role in keeping the camp running was enough to convict him.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET AN EMAIL FROM HARRY.POTTER@GMAIL.COM...

Something’s off here. Twitter can relate. Yesterday, a website that looked exactly like Bloomberg posted “news” that there was a $31 billion buyout offer for Twitter. If it walks like Bloomberg and talks like Bloomberg...it’s still not Bloomberg.  The website, called www.bloomberg.market, was fake. And so was the report. But Twitter shares shot up at the news, only to fall back down when Twitter called BS. It’s not clear who was behind the faux story. This comes as Twitter’s been having more than 140 characters-worth of issues. Earlier this month, the CEO was replaced by co-founder Jack Dorsey. Again. The company’s had multiple shakeups and meh user growth. And acquisition rumors have been floating around for a while. Key word: rumors.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR OFFICE SAYS IT’S ‘RESTRUCTURING’...

Who’s getting the axe? This week, Nigeria’s new president replaced all of the country’s top military officials. That’s because Nigeria’s been dealing with intensified attacks from Islamic militant group Boko Haram - the same one that kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls last year. The group’s gains haven’t helped the military’s rep. And neither have human rights abuse allegations . Nigeria’s prez hopes a new military lineup will wipe the slate clean and help the country crack down on Boko Haram. Timely, since he’s visiting DC next week to ask President Obama and US officials for more help in the fight against the group.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO STILL THINKS RACHEL MCADAMS AND RYAN GOSLING ARE TOGETHER...

That was nine years ago. And so was that time a NASA spacecraft took off for Pluto. That same spacecraft finally flew by Pluto yesterday, and snapped some pics
