QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Basically raw sewage” – The results of an investigation into the water where athletes will be competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Great.

THINGS PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT

THE TALIBAN

THE STORY

The Taliban has a new CEO.

DETAILS PLEASE.

This week, the group confirmed that its previous leader, Mullah Omar, is dead. The new guy, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, has been running the show for years behind the scenes while the Taliban pretended Omar was still alive. Earlier this month, the Afghan gov. and the Taliban came together for their first sit-down to try to end 14 years of war between them. Today was supposed to be the second sit-down. But the new guy came in, and now the peace talks have been put on ice.  Indefinitely.

theSKIMM

Talk of a possible peace deal between the Taliban and the Afghan gov. raised hopes that some much-needed stability could come to the country. Now, there’s a new leader for the Taliban — and renewed uncertainty in a region that has a lot of that already.

CECIL THE LION

THE STORY

The fallout continues in the case of Cecil, a beloved lion that was killed by an American dentist earlier this month in Zimbabwe.

CATCH ME UP.

Cecil lived in a protected national park where it’s illegal to hunt. He was lured out of the park by hunting guides that were hired by the dentist, who shot the lion. The dentist has said that as far as he knew, “everything about this trip was legal and properly handled.” After a big public uproar, a US agency is now investigating whether any US laws were violated in Cecil’s death. And yesterday, the  UN passed its first-ever resolution to fight illegal trafficking and poaching.

Cecil’s death has put a big spotlight on an issue that doesn’t normally get a lot of buzz. Case in point – the UN is launching a global push to try to tackle the problem.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING...

Still Cincinnati. Earlier this month, a white police officer shot and killed Samuel DuBose, a black man, during a traffic stop. The officer said he was forced to shoot after almost being run over. But body-cam footage appears to show the officer shooting DuBose shortly after trying to open the car door. Cue the officer no longer being an officer. And being charged with murder. Yesterday, he pleaded not guilty, and was released from jail after paying bail . There have been a lot of headlines over the past year about deadly shootings involving police officers. In response, there’s been a push to outfit local PDs with body-cams, to provide more clarity.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO IDOLIZED TARA LIPINSKI...

Find your new hero in Beijing. Today it was announced the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held there.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR GRANDPA CALLS FLIP FLOPS ‘THONGS’...

Try again, please. Yesterday, the Obama administration kindly asked the Supreme Court to take a look at a decision a lower court made last year about insider trading rules. Last December , a federal appeals court decided that insider trading was not a crime unless it could be proven that traders knew that the person tipping them off could potentially benefit. The Obama administration said the new standard makes it harder for them to crack down on Gordon Gekkos. The Supremes are on summer vacay, so they’ll likely decide this fall whether or not to consider the appeal. Stay tuned.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HAVE DEJA-VU...

Hopefully not like this. Yesterday in Jerusalem, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man stabbed six marchers at a gay pride parade. Luckily no one was killed, but two people were seriously injured. 10 years ago, this same guy stabbed people, also at a gay pride parade in Jerusalem. Then he went to prison. And he got out just weeks ago to do it again.  Although these types of attacks aren’t the norm, gay pride events in Jerusalem have a history of tension between the LGBT community and the ultra-Orthodox community.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO SPENDS HER PAYCHECK ON SOULCYCLE CLASSES...

Might wanna start investing. Yesterday, SoulCycle filed for an IPO. Cue people in spandex racing to invest. It was founded in 2006 to bring “inspiration, transformation, celebration” – and sculpted calves – to the people. Now, Soul has been brought. There are 38 studios  and the company brought in $112 million in 2014. Equinox owns most of the company, so the IPO is a big deal for the fitness power couple. The company announced their COO will become CEO, but the founders will stay involved in the biz. #TapItBack
