Skimm’d after seeing “Trainwreck.”
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Probably getting a new phone” – GOP presidential candidate Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), after fellow GOP candidate Donald Trump released Graham’s number to the public. Glad to see presidential hopefuls getting everyone excited about the issues.

DONE DEAL?

THE STORY

Remember that nuclear deal that the US, Iran, and five other countries finally agreed to earlier this month? Fun’s not over yet.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

Earlier this week, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei said that despite the deal, Iran would continue to generally give the middle finger to US policies in the region. Sec. of State John Kerry found this “very disturbing.” So, there’s that. Meanwhile, now it’s Congress’s turn to look over the deal.

FILL ME IN.

Congress has less than 60 days to vote on it. If they vote ‘no,’ President Obama will pull out his handy ‘veto’ stamp – something he’s hoping to avoid. He’d much rather Congress gave the thumbs up to one of his top foreign policy achievements.

SO WHAT’S HAPPENING?

A whole lot of arm-twisting. The deal’s supporters and critics are hitting Capitol Hill to convince lawmakers to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Yesterday, Obama said the Iran deal’s critics are the “same folks who were so quick to go to war in Iraq,” and that the deal is “a smarter, more responsible way to protect our national security.” Critics beg to differ, saying the deal is a mistake that will lead to a nuclear Iran in no time.

theSKIMM

This deal is already a diplomatic breakthrough for the West and Iran. Now, it just has to survive Congress. Always an easy task.

SKIMM YOUR CANDIDATE: SEN. BERNIE SANDERS (I-VT), DEMOCRAT

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is an Independent running for the Democratic nomination in 2016. And he’s one of just a few people taking on Hillz. Get to know your candidate here. Note: ALL candidates have been offered the chance to Guest Skimm. Opinions are of the candidate, not theSkimm.

HOMETOWN:

Burlington, VT

FUN FACT:

I have seven beautiful grandchildren.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I was mayor of the city of Burlington, VT for eight years. And I think that people who visit Burlington today will find it to be one of the more exciting and liveable cities in America, and my administration played a role in making that happen. I was a congressman from 1990 to 2006, for 16 years, and then I’ve been in the US Senate since, for nine years.

SO, WHY SHOULD AMERICA HIRE YOU?

Well, I think that this country faces enormous problems today. We have income and wealth inequality almost greater than any country on earth, and I think that’s unfair….I don’t think that that’s the nation that America wants to be. And I think that we need leadership to stand up to the billionaire class…and make sure that our government works for all of the people, and not just a handful of wealthy people.

WHO SHOULD WE CALL FOR A REFERENCE?

The people of the state of Vermont. Now, that’s 630,000 people so you’re going to have to make a lot of calls…

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH?

I think that the agenda I’m bringing forward is an agenda that resonates with the American people.

WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESS?

I probably get focused on too many issues, and am not as sociable as I might be.

WHERE DO YOU STAND ON THE FOLLOWING...

THE ECONOMY.

I think I just gave it to you [see above]. The middle class in the United States is disappearing. We need to create millions of decent paying jobs, raise the minimum wage, and provide pay equity for women workers.

THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (AKA OBAMACARE).

The United States is the only major country on earth that does not guarantee healthcare to all people as a right. I believe in a Medicare for all, single-payer program, guaranteeing health care to all people. I voted for the Affordable Care Act, but that still leaves 35 million Americans without any health insurance.

EDUCATION.

[Congress has] introduced legislation [proposed by Sanders] regarding higher education financing [that] does two things. Number one, it provides free tuition at public colleges and universities…it substantially lowers student debt by allowing those people who have the debt to refinance their loans at lower interest rates. And number two, it gets the government, who holds many of these loans, out of the business of profiteering off middle class and working class families.

CLIMATE CHANGE.

I have helped to lead the US Congress in introducing legislation to combat climate change. I’ve introduced the most comprehensive legislation on climate change in Congress.

THE IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL.

Well, the devil is in the details, but I applaud the president and Secretary Kerry for the hard work of working with six countries, and Iran, in order to make sure that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon, and that we can reach that goal without having to go to war.

GUN CONTROL.

I represent a state which is a very rural state — and my state has virtually no gun control at all — but despite that, I voted to ban certain types of semi-automatic weapons. I voted for an instant background check. And I voted to close the loophole that currently exists for gun shows.

RIGHT TO CHOOSE. YES OR NO?

Yes, I have 100% lifetime voting record. I believe a woman has the right to control her own body, and not the government.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SUPREME COURT’S RULING ON GAY MARRIAGE?

I strongly supported the Supreme Court decision.

WHAT WOULD YOU ASK THE WHITE HOUSE CHEF TO MAKE FOR YOUR FIRST MEAL?

I really haven’t thought too much about that.

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HIT SNOOZE IN THE MORNING?

I don’t.

HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?

Do you have many of these questions?

NO, THIS IS THE LAST ONE.

With some cream.

Bernie Sanders is a self-described socialist who wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and supports breaking up big banks. He's also drawing some of the biggest and youngest crowds of any candidate in the race so far — making the Democratic nomination contest much spicier than the party expected. TBD on whether the momentum will translate into votes.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR BALANCE LOOKS LOW...

I blame the bank. Yesterday, a US agency ordered Citigroup to pay more than $700 million for shady credit card practices. Think: charging people for things like debt protection without their knowledge. More than eight million people were affected, and the bank says it’s already started refunding customers. Add this to the billions in fines and settlements Citi’s already paid since the financial crisis. Just another day. #blessed

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING...

The Sandra Bland case. Earlier this month, the black 28-year-old civil rights activist was arrested after a traffic stop in Texas. She was found dead in her jail cell three days later. And yesterday, Texas released dash cam footage from her arrest. It shows a state trooper pulling her over for failing to signal a lane change. While the two are talking, he asks her to put out her cigarette. She asks why she can’t smoke in her own car. The state trooper then asks Bland to get out of the car. When she refuses, he apparently threatens her with a stun gun and and says “I will light you up.” State legislators are now saying ‘that escalated quickly,’ and that Bland shouldn’t have even been taken into custody. Authorities said her death was a suicide. But her family’s not so sure about that, and has asked for an independent autopsy

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO’S ALWAYS ON GOODREADS...

Did you hear about E.L. Doctorow? Yesterday, the award-winning novelist died at age 84. He was known for mixing fictional and historical characters into his American novels. And for that time his book “Ragtime” became a hugely popular Broadway play and movie. President Obama called Doctorow “one of America’s greatest novelists.”

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Tibet and China. Earlier this month, a prominent Tibetan monk died while in a Chinese prison. Then yesterday, it came out that Chinese police reportedly seized the monk’s ashes while they were being transported back home. Reminder: China claims ownership over Tibet. But many Tibetans say the Dalai Lama’s actually their leader. The monk – who was a big Dalai Lama supporter – was sentenced to life in prison for allegedly planning bombings in China. But some think the Chinese government was just trying to silence him. Chinese officials say he died in prison of heart attack. But his family thinks he was killed. Protests have broken out in China, with people asking for the full story. And everyone knows how much China loves protests.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO’S LOOKING TO MOVE TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD...

I hear the Milky Way’s lovely this time of year. Stephen Hawking and Russian investor friend Yuri Milner might be able to hook you up. They’re shelling out $100 million to try to prove that ET’s not just a movie.

THING TO KNOW

Rod BlagojevichCurrently, a Colorado prison inmate. You know him for his hair and reality show appearances. And because he’s the former Illinois gov. who was convicted on 18 counts of corruption and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Yesterday, a court overturned five of those 18 counts. So, Blago will probably be in a jumpsuit for a little less time than we thought. Mazel.
