QUOTE OF THE DAY

“That’s a fantasy” — US Sec. of State John Kerryon the idea that the US should somehow force Iran to give up its nuclear program altogether. Kerry was on the Hill yesterday trying to seal the Iran nuclear deal. You can see how well that’s going.

THINGS ON PEOPLE'S MINDS

LOUISIANA

THE STORY

Last night, two people were killed and at least nine were injured when a gunman opened fire at a movie theater in Lafayette, LA. The gunman then killed himself.

THE WHAT

The suspect is a 58-year-old white man who officials believe acted alone. He entered the movie theater during a showing of “Trainwreck.”

This is yet another mass shooting to rock the country. This one comes eerily just over three years after James Holmes opened fire on a crowded movie theater in Denver, CO, killing 12 and injuring 70.

ISIS

THE STORY

For months, the US has been asking Turkey if it could please launch airstrikes against ISIS from Turkish soil. And Turkey’s said, ‘nah.’ Yesterday, Turkey changed its mind.

WHY’S THAT?

Because now ISIS is a problem for Turkey. Yesterday, Turkish troops and ISIS militants based in Syria clashed in a rare cross-border battle. That’s after a suicide bomber, with suspected ties to ISIS, killed more than 30 people in Turkey this week. For political reasonsTurkey’s preferred to stay on the sidelines in the US-led fight…until now. Now, the US can use a key air base in Turkey to launch airstrikes against ISIS in Syria

One US official called Turkey’s decision a “game changer.”

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU HAVE TEN IMPORTANT EMAILS BEFORE GETTING OUT OF BED...

My inbox is stressing me out. Hillary Clinton might agree. Yesterday, the New York Times reported that two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into Clinton’s inbox choices. Earlier this year, everyone found out that Hillz - who, heads up, is running for president - used her personal email instead of a government address while Sec. of State. Which raised flags about security. Hillz has said she didn’t use the email for anything classified (aside from her iced tea cravings). But now, the inspectors general are saying that the account contains “hundreds of potentially classified emails.” It’s not clear whether these emails were marked classified by the State Department at the time. Now, the Justice Department has to decide whether to investigate.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE WIFI’S BAD AND YOU’RE TRYING TO WATCH “BLOODLINE”...

Blocked. Yesterday, the EU filed antitrust charges against pay-TV service Sky UK and six major US film studios.  The EU pointed out that contracts between Sky UK and the studios block European customers from viewing content outside the UK and Ireland. Meaning, if you’re a Sky UK subscriber from London traveling to Paris for the weekend, you aren’t necessarily able to enjoy a movie from these studios on Sky UK with your croissant. Studios typically cut deals on a country-by-country basis — in part because mo countries means mo money. But the EU thinks it’s time that all EU countries be treated equally. Because marathoning knows no borders.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT...

Sandra Bland. Yesterday, a Texas DA said her death has been ruled a suicide, after getting autopsy results back. Earlier this month, Bland, a 28-year-old black woman, was pulled over by a state trooper for failing to signal a lane change. When she refused to put out her cigarette or get out of the car, the officer threatened to taser her. Then she got out of the car. A lot of the interaction wasn’t caught on dash cam footage. Insert lots of questions about that. Bland was arrested and found dead in her jail cell three days later. Cue the controversy over what happened. Officials said that she committed suicide. But her family wasn’t so sure. This DA said that details from the autopsy were consistent with suicide and show no signs of a struggle.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR PARENTS SELL YOUR CHILDHOOD HOME...

It’s been a good run. Yesterday, publishing group Pearson announced it’s selling the Financial Times to Japanese media firm Nikkei for $1.3 billion. FT was one of Pearson’s best-known brands. But it slapped a ‘for sale’ sign on FT to focus more on investing in education, which now makes up most of its biz. But Pearson’s not ready to break-up with the markets just yet - the sale doesn’t include its 50% stake in “The Economist.” In other crucial business news...you might want to sit down (on an inflatable couch) for this.... Limited Too is coming back. This is not a drill.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SHOW UP IN THE SAME SHIRT AS YOUR CO-WORKER...

Twinning. Yesterday, NASA said one of its spacecrafts has spotted Earth’s closest match yet. It’s a sister planet from another mister: around the same size as Earth, with a semi-nearby star (like the Sun). TBD on whether this planet has any water or air. But yesterday, a NASA scientist said, “Today, Earth is a little less lonely,” confirming it is possible to find love in a hopeless space.

WHAT TO SAY WHILE TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO TONIGHT...

SKIMM READS

Skimm’ologist says: Sip this spicy Asian cocktail to get you in the mood for these reads.

“Crazy Rich Asians” and “China Rich Girlfriend” by Kevin Kwan

Meet your next beach read, and its new sequel. There’s a reason you’re seeing these two books everywhere. About a (yes) very crazy, very rich Asian family that doesn’t react well when their only son brings his American girlfriend home for the summer. Think: “Pride & Prejudice” meets “Gossip Girl”…but with a few extra billion.
