QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Congratulations, Dad; you made it” - From a speech Sydney Seau wrote for her dad’s Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. The Hall has a policy of not letting people give live speeches for inductees who have passed away, so she couldn’t give it. Junior Seau committed suicide three years ago and was found to have suffered a brain condition linked to repeated hits to the head.

ONE YEAR LATER

THE STORY

Yesterday marked one year since unarmed black teen Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, MO. And last night, protests in Ferguson turned violent.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A day of peaceful marches and moments of silence turned into a night of looting and heightened tension between police and protesters. Then there were shots fired. In one incident, police say a man opened fired on officers in an unmarked car. The police officers fired back and the man was critically injured.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Also over the weekend, Christian Taylor - an unarmed black college football player - was shot and killed by a police trainee at a car dealership in Texas. He was shot after reports of a burglary at the dealership. Now, the FBI’s helping out with an investigation into what happened. Meanwhile, President Obama said in an interview yesterday that he feels a “great urgency” to address racial issues in the US.

Last night was an unfortunate reminder of the violent protests that rocked Ferguson following last year’s shooting. Brown’s death and other recent high-profile cases have made the relationship between police and citizens in the US even more of a hot topic than usual. Just in time for 2016.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU SEE YOUR OFFICE RIVAL G-CHATTING ABOUT YOU…

Bad blood. At the GOP debate last week, Donald Trump and Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly didn’t exactly become friends. In the aftermath on Friday, Trump said  Kelly had “blood coming out of her eyes, coming out of her wherever.” Cue a lot of opinions about what that implied (cough comes at the end of a sentence cough). Lots of people are now saying that Trump trumped himself and went too far this time. Far enough to get disinvited to a big conservative event over the weekend. But Trump thinks this is all NBD. Yesterday he said  “what I said was appropriate” and the word ‘wherever’ was referring to her nose. Glad that’s settled. In other news, Trump and his campaign adviser Roger Stone broke up on Saturday. And since the Trump campaign is all about understated PR, both sides are pointing fingers over who fired whom.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

Frank Gifford. Yesterday, the Hall of Fame football player and broadcaster died at age 84 of natural causes. Sports fans know him as an NFL legend, and morning TV fans know him as Kathie Lee Gifford’s husband. Gifford played for the New York Giants for his entire NFL career, helping them win the Super Bowl before it was even called the Super Bowl. Gifford later hosted “Monday Night Football.”

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THERE’S NO LINE AT THE MEN’S ROOM…

Can’t I just go in? Target would probably say yes. On Friday, the company said it’s getting rid of gender-based signs. Think: no more ‘girl’s toys’ and ‘boy’s toys.’ The announcement isn’t out of the blue…or pink. Earlier this summer, a picture that separated ‘building sets’ and ‘girls’ building sets’ went viral. Because building is an equal opportunity activity. So now Barbie’s moving in with Bob the Builder.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR AUSTRALIAN FRIEND…

Don’t Vegemite and drive. Turns out that Vegemite - that appealing brown spread Australians put on their toast - can also be used to make moonshine. It’s made with leftover yeast from breweries mixed with veggies and spices. Yum. The Australian government now wants communities to start restricting sale of the spread because people are basically using it to pregame. Cheers, mate.

THING TO KNOW

Bonnet ripper: The name that’s apparently used to describe the genre that is Amish romance novels. Church baby churn.
