QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Amazon is where overachievers go to feel bad about themselves” – A former Amazon employee, according to the New York Times. Yesterday, the paper ran a cover story on the company’s culture. Hint: it doesn’t seem good.

THINGS PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT

INDONESIAN PLANE

THE STORY

Today, search and rescue teams found what’s believed to be debris from the Indonesian plane that went missing yesterday.

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

The plane had 54 people on board when it went missing between two cities in eastern Indonesia in bad weather. Villagers in the remote Papua region reported seeing a plane crash into a mountain. Now, search and rescue teams in the area say they have spotted debris. It’s not clear exactly what happened and whether there are any survivors.

This has been a rough couple of years for airlines operating out of Southeast Asia. After last year’s AirAsia crash that killed 162 people, the Indonesian government introduced new safety regulations. Those may not be working quite as planned.

2016

THE STORY

The Iowa State Fair was in full swing this weekend, where a life-sized butter cow got upstaged by a helicopter (spoiler: it was Trump’s).

REMIND ME WHY I HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO IOWA?

Because it’s where primary voting kicks off next year. The Iowa caucuses are the first thing that actually counts in the race to the White House. That’s why a lot of 2016 candidates showed up for the deep-fried butter and to get in front of Iowa voters

ANYTHING ELSE?

Trump also talked immigration this weekend. He says if he’s elected, he’ll deport all undocumented immigrants and have Mexico pay for a wall on the US border. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton ate pork-on-a-stick and fielded questions about her inbox. Reminder: the FBI’s investigating  whether classified material was compromised on the private email server she used as secretary of state. Ahhh politics.

In 2008, Iowa voters handed a ‘W’ to a long-shot candidate named Barack Obama – and gave third place to then-frontrunner Hillz. Read: what Iowa thinks matters. A lot.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING…

China. Explosions at a warehouse in a port city last week killed at least 112 people. Yesterday, it came out that there were hundreds of tons of sodium cyanide at the blast site. Not good. Although it’s still unclear exactly what happened, everyone within about two miles of the warehouse has had to evacuate because chemicals could be in the air. Officials are hoping to clean up before it rains, which could create more toxic gas.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU THINK YOU HEAR CRACKLING ON A PHONE CALL…

NSA, is that you? Over the weekend, the New York Times  reported that the NSA and AT&T are BFFs. The report cites documents from, who else, Mr. Edward Snowden. The documents reveal that AT&T had an especially close partnership with the agency. As in, it provided the NSA with billions of emails from its networks and, starting in 2011, gave the NSA over a billion cellphone records. In case you forgot, all of this is legal since the NSA obtained secret court orders involving surveillance. Aka it’s pretty tough for a company to say ‘no thanks’ when it comes to helping the agency out. It’s not clear if the two still have a close relationship since these docs only go through 2013. But this has the potential to reignite the debate over whether surveillance is a necessary evil to protect the public (Camp NSA) or whether it’s just plain evil spying (Camp Snowden & friends).

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

The death of E’dena Hines. Yesterday, Morgan Freeman’s 33-year-old step-granddaughter was stabbed to death in New York City. Hines was found lying in the street near her apartment at around 3 AM. A man has been arrested, but no charges have been filed yet. Hines is the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife. A few years ago, there were rumors that Hines and Freeman were romantically involved — which they both denied. Yesterday in a statement, Freeman said, “the world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer.”

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR BOSS ASKS IF YOU’RE GOING TO THE COMPANY GOLF OUTING…

Fore sure. Over the weekend, golf fans were following the PGA Championship – the last opportunity of the season to spend hours watching golf stars duke it out for a major title. Australian Jason Day took home the trophy…and $1.8 million. It’s his first big win. Meanwhile, it was a sad day for Jordan Spieth, the 22-year-old who birdied his way into the hearts of Americans after winning the Masters and the US Open earlier this year. The two were battling it out on the green all weekend until late yesterday when Day took a big lead. Another highlight? Bubba Watson got his golf pants in a bunch over an anthill on the course. Never a dull mulligan.

THING TO KNOW

Julian Bond: The civil rights activist died over the weekend at the age of 75. He was a former chairman of the NAACP, Georgia state congressman, leader in the fight against the Vietnam War, and an overall big name in the 1960s civil rights movement.
