QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It’s the perfect partnership” - An HBO exec on “Sesame Street” coming to the network. Best wishes to Elmo and Cersei on their new life together.

THINGS GETTING THE LAW & ORDER TREATMENT

COLORADO

THE STORY

Yesterday, a Colorado appeals court said ‘let them eat cake’…as in it’s illegal for a Denver baker to refuse service to same-sex couples.

EXPLAIN.

Three years ago, a gay couple asked this baker to make a wedding cake. The baker said ‘no dice,’ on the grounds that making the cake violated his Christian beliefs. And that he can say ‘no’ because free speech. Now, a Colorado court’s said there’s another name for his refusal to make the cake: discrimination.

Though the Supremes already gave the final say on gay marriage, some business owners still aren’t ok with the idea, and they’re fighting back on the grounds of free speech. So far, courts have said that gay couples should be able to have their cake and eat it too - no matter who’s baking it.

CONNECTICUT

THE STORY

Yesterday, Connecticut’s highest court said ‘let them live’…as in 11 death row inmates in the state will be spared.

EXPLAIN.

Connecticut got rid of the death penalty three years ago. But that change didn’t apply to these 11 prisoners who were already on death row. Now, a court’s said that executing them would violate the state’s constitution. Read: it would count as “cruel and unusual punishment.”

While Connecticut’s made its decision, the death penalty is still very much a hot topic across the US. Especially after lethal injection drugs – that have been accused of being cruel and unusual punishment – allegedly contributed to botched executions like this and this.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO ALWAYS BRINGS UP POLITICS AT DRINKS…

Happy Iowa State Fair. Yesterday, the annual fair kicked off. Which means over the next 11 days, most of the 2016 presidential candidates  will be eating corn dogs, admiring butter sculptures, and asking people to vote for them. Iowa is a BFD because it’s where primary voting season kicks off in February. The Iowa caucuses are pretty much town meetings where voters discuss the best candidate for the nomination. It’s the first major electoral event every year, and the first real test in the race to the White House. And the fair is a BFD because it’s the first time candidates get to stand on their soapbox in front of Iowa voters. This year’s lineup includes more than a dozen candidates. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton  have reportedly said ‘no thanks’ to speaking, but they’re both expected to be there on Saturday. Cue memes of the Donald and Hillz sharing a pumpkin spice funnel cake.

WHAT TO SAY AFTER PULLING AN ALL-NIGHTER...

Just like the Greek parliament. After an intense all-nighter, it passed the country’s third bailout agreement today. Not everyone’s saying ‘opa.’ Reminder: Greece has been having money problems for a while. Years ago, the country got bailed out by international creditors in exchange for austerity measures (think: tax hikes, pension cuts). But those measures made living in Greece not-so-fun. Enter: a political party that won election earlier this year on the promise to change all that. It tried to convince creditors to keep giving Greece bailout money without all the austerity attached. To which creditors said hahaha. Cue Greece defaulting on a huge payment earlier this summer. And its prime minister later accepting a bailout deal with A LOT of austerity. The same austerity his party promised it would get rid of. You can guess how well that’s gone over in the party. Though this deal still needs to get the official sign-off from the eurozone, it means Greece is one step closer to getting $93 billion. It also means that Greece’s PM is getting a lot of shade at at work

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR BOSS TELLS YOU THE COMPANY IS DOWNSIZING…

Well that’s not encouraging. Yesterday, forecasters said this year’s El Nino could be one of the worst ever. Great. El Nino is a weather pattern that’s known to cause major natural disasters like intense flooding, cyclones, and drought conditions. It starts in the Pacific Ocean and it has hit southern California hard in the past. It looks like this year’s El Nino could last until next Spring. The good news? California is in the middle of an epic drought , so El Nino could be just what the doctor ordered. Bad news? It also causes dangerous mudslides. Not the alcoholic kind.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

Using rape as a recruitment tool. A New York Times  report says ISIS is doing just that to recruit men in Iraq and Syria. The terror group allegedly targets women who are Yazidi, a religious minority. Because Yazidis don’t share the same beliefs as Muslims, the terror group reportedly claims that raping them is OK. And it’s also apparently good advertising. ISIS is essentially saying if you join the fight you can have a lot of sex. They’re hoping that’s a draw for ultra conservative Muslim men who come from backgrounds where casual sex is taboo. The report comes as ISIS has been ramping up its attacks in Baghdad. Earlier this week, the group claimed responsibility for a car bomb  that killed at least 70 people.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND’S TEXTING HER EX…

Back together again? Just like the American flag and the US embassy in Cuba.
