Skimm’d after watching “The Wonder Years.” Sigh.
QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war” – President Obama on why he wants Congress to approve a little thing called the Iran nuclear deal.

THINGS EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUT

THE PLANE

THE STORY

Everyone’s pretty, pretty sure that debris found last week on an island in the Indian Ocean is from the missing plane. More sure than they were last lime. And the time before that.

WHAT DO WE KNOW?

A Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing went missing more than a year ago with 239 people on board, and no one knew what the F happened. Last week, debris washed ashore on Reunion Island (in the Indian Ocean, near Madagascar). It was sent to France, where experts said they have a strong feeling it’s from the missing plane.

It looks like this is a major clue to the mystery of the plane. But still TBD – how and why the plane turned from its original flight path.

THE DEBATE

THE STORY

The first presidential debate is tonight. And the GOP has the talking stick. The top 10 candidates — based on the average of recent national polls — will argue it out on Fox News over who should take the White House.

WHO DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Donald Trump...the one with the hair. He’s polling the highest by far – despite being the most controversial candidate by far.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush (FL)...the one who’s a Bush. But he wants you to call him Jeb. Exclamation mark included

Gov. Scott Walker (WI)...the one with the union beef. He’s apparently uninterested in beef with other candidates tonight.

Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR)...the one who was a pastor and previously seen on Fox News. He has some aggressive stances on social issues

Ben Carson...the one who’s a neurosurgeon with no political experience

Sen. Ted Cruz (TX)...the one who’s a Tea Party golden boy.

Sen. Marco Rubio (FL)...the one with a ‘Gate. #WaterBottleGate

Gov. Chris Christie (NJ)...the other one with a ‘Gate. #BridgeGate.

Sen. Rand Paul (KY)...the one where every time he says he wants ‘smaller government,’ you take a drink.

Gov. John Kasich (OH)...the one who barely made the cut, and also used to be a Fox News host. Welcome home.

It’s still 2015, but it already smells like 2016 spirit.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GO TO YOUR BOSS’S SUMMER MANSION FOR THE OFFICE BBQ…

Must be nice. Yesterday, the SEC told the CEOs of most public companies to make their salaries public...and then play a game of compare and contrast with their employees’ salaries. Hint: one is much higher. In some cases, CEOs are making 800 times the average employee. Supporters are saying ’bout time,’ this will put a spotlight on income inequality. Critics are saying ‘WTF,’ this is a useless rule that only serves to shame CEOs about how much they make. In other paycheck news,  Netflix wants its employees to keep theirs while they have babies. Earlier this week, the company announced it’s allowing new parents to take off up to a year and still get paid. So that makes changing diapers a little more bearable.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE WAITRESS ASKS TO SEE YOUR ID...

That’s a controversial question in Texas. Yesterday, a federal appeals court ruled against a Texas law that requires voters to show certain approved forms of ID at the polls. For example, college IDs are a no-go, but driver’s licenses and concealed gun licenses are OK. The court decided it has a discriminatory effect on minority voters. This law was signed in 2011 and has been controversial ever since. Supporters say it’s needed to protect the voting process in Texas. Critics - including the Justice Department - say that voter fraud is a non-issue and instead, the law just makes it harder for low-income and minority voters to get an “I Voted” sticker. Now, the law’s going to a lower court for some revisions. PS: today is the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU REMEMBER TONIGHT IS JON STEWART’S LAST SHOW...

Cosby jokes might be off limits. It looks like Bill Cosby will have to talk about one of the sexual abuse cases against him. He’s been ordered to give a deposition under oath later this year. The alleged victim is one of the women who have publicly accused Cosby of sexual abuse. She was a minor when the alleged abuse happened, so the statute of limitations that has allowed Cosby to keep quiet until now doesn’t apply. He’s never been charged.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE INTERN IS SITTING AT YOUR DESK...

So you think this is yours now? Recently, China’s been saying ‘mine’ to contested territory in the South China Sea. Yesterday, US Sec. of State Kerry told China’s foreign minister ‘relax’ with the territory grabbing.  The South China Sea is home to major shipping routes, which is why pretty much every country in the neighborhood says it’s theirs. Last year, China went SimCity on everyone and built about 2,000 acres of artificial islands…complete with helipads, airstrips, and military facilities. The US has repeatedly told China to kindly pump the brakes, since this could become a bigger issue in the region. And yesterday, Kerry told them again. Good talk.

THING TO KNOW

Catty-corner: The phrase your aunt uses when you’re trying to agree on a meeting place for brunch. It means diagonally opposite.
