QUOTE OF THE DAY

“As the campaign moves along, tough decisions have to be made” — A statement from Rick Perry’s campaign. Translation: the staff won’t be getting paid anymore. Always an encouraging sign.

THINGS WITH MONEY ON THE MIND

CHINA

THE STORY

Earlier this week, China said ‘surprise,’ and devalued its currency - the yuan - by a lot. But what happens in China doesn’t stay in China.

WHY DID THEY DO THAT?

Because China’s economy has been hungover for months. By devaluing its currency, the country made Chinese goods cheaper to buy. Now, goods made in other countries will be more expensive in comparison — meaning consumers and companies are more likely to buy from China. Ding, ding! It’s affecting global markets in a big way.

HOW SO?

Companies that do a lot of business in China (think: Apple) suffered hits on Wall Street yesterday. While international currencies that compete with China (think: Australia, Singapore, South Korea) also had a no good, very bad day.  Oh, and US oil prices - which have already been dropping like it’s hot -  dipped to a six-year low.

This move is meant to boost China’s economy. But some are worried this could start a global currency war. To be continued…

HACKERS

THE STORY

Yesterday, US officials let everyone know they charged nine people for being involved in a five-year-long hacking scheme. Great.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A PR nightmare. Actually though. Two Ukrainian men hacked into services that distribute press releases for big corporations. Those press releases contained things like earnings reports and merger announcements, and were passed off to traders. Think: very, very illegal. The group involved made about $100 million.

This is insider trading, 2015 style. And a reminder that the Interwebs will never be as secure as a filing cabinet.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND ASKS FOR YOUR iPHONE PASSCODE...

Coming right up. Yesterday, Hillary Clinton told her staff to hand over her private email server, plus a thumb drive of work-related emails, to the Justice Department. Reminder: Hillz has gotten criticism for using a personal email and private server while she was sec. of state. Many have questioned whether that was the most secure thing to do. Cue the FBI looking into the security of her inbox setup. And yesterday, an intelligence official said that two of these emails contained “top secret” info. Clinton’s always said that no info exchanged on the email was marked as classified at the time. Her spokesman said handing over the server is Hillz cooperating with investigators. Because in case you forgot, she’s running for president.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING...

Arlington, TX. Yesterday, police officer-in-training Brad Miller was fired for shooting unarmed black college football player Christian Taylor. Last week, police found Taylor inside a car dealership at night after reports of a suspected burglary. The police chief says that Miller then used “poor judgment.” Meaning he apparently didn’t communicate well with the other officers, and approached Taylor on his own without an arrest plan. When Taylor advanced towards him, Miller reportedly fired the shots. The police chief says Taylor never made physical contact with any of the officers. This incident happened days before the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death . Now, it’s up to a grand jury to decide whether to bring criminal charges against Miller.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

Yesterday, Amnesty International  voted for a policy to decriminalize sex work. This means Amnesty will try to convince governments that sex workers shouldn’t be breaking the law when they…work. Amnesty says that decriminalization will help stop violence and discrimination against consensual sex workers. Key word: consensual. The organization made it clear that human trafficking and sex with minors is not OK. But anti-trafficking organizations are NOT down with this move. In a letter written to Amnesty and supported by no-names like Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet, one organization said decriminalization will turn brothel owners into legit businessmen.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO SIGNS EMAILS ‘XOXO GOSSIP GIRL’...

This sign off is worse. Yesterday, actress Kelly Rutherford was ordered to send her kids back to Monaco, where her ex-husband lives. She’s been in a custody battle with her ex Daniel Giersch for six years - longer than she was Serena van der Woodsen’s mom. Last week, she refused to send her kids, who had been visiting her int he US, back to Monaco. Giersch then accused her of kidnapping. Cue a judge ordering her to send the kids back to their dad. Rutherford will be going to Monaco next month for another hearing. The saga continues.

WHAT TO SAY WHILE READING AN ANGRY COMMENTS SECTION…

Well that escalated quickly. Yesterday, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith went into the locker room…and came out with a broken jaw. Smith will be off the field for at least six weeks while he heals. He was “sucker-punched” by reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali...who is now no longer a reserve linebacker. The Jets cut him. While the beef was reportedly over $600 Enemkpali gave to Smith for a plane ticket, the Jets coach said the fight was because of “something very childish.” Because $600 is actually child’s play in pro sports.

THING TO KNOW

Yuan: Wondering how to pronounce it? Pssst…we got you covered. It’s “you-ahn.” Feel free to talk to finance friends sans judgement.
