QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I am endlessly sorry” – Volkswagen’s CEO. Yesterday, he apologized for that time the company cheated on emissions tests to make 11 million cars seem more environmentally friendly. Objects in mirror are not as green as they appear.

THINGS MAKING A LANDING

THE POPE

THE STORY

Yesterday, Pope Francis touched down in the US for the first time. It’s now officially OK to wear white after Labor Day.

WHAT’S ON THE AGENDA?

He’ll be speaking to Congress in DC, addressing the UN in NYC, and giving mass by the “Rocky” steps in Philly. Some things he might talk about? Climate change, and how the world needs to start doing something about global warming. Cuba, and how the US embargo on the island nation needs to go.  Immigration , and how US Catholics should lend a hand to the EU’s migrant and refugee crisis.

When the pope talks, people listen. His first visit to the US comes at a critical time for the issues he’s expected to talk about and just happens to coincide with International World Leader Prom, also known as the UN General Assembly.

XI JINPING

THE STORY

Yesterday, Chinese President Xi Jinping lost his US state visit V-card. This is his first time on American soil as prez.

COUGH, HOW DO YOU SAY HIS NAME, COUGH?

It’s pronounced ‘she gin-ping.’

WHAT’S ON THE AGENDA?

He’s talking to big corporations like Starbucks and Microsoft in Seattle. He’s talking to President Obama. And he’s making a speech at the UN General Assembly. Things that’ll likely be on his mind? China’s economy, which has been tanking for months, and how to reassure US companies that China’s still a great place to do businessCybersecurity, and the cyberattacks on the US that his country’s been blamed for. And the South China Sea, a region where China’s been building islands and saying ‘mine’ to disputed territory.

China’s the second largest economy in the world, so what Xi says matters. But China’s economy hasn’t been looking so hot lately, and since the country’s about as transparent as a brick wall, it’s hard for everyone else to get a real read. Hopefully Xi’s visit will offer some reading material.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR TEAM’S LOSING...

‘It ain’t over till it’s over.’ Thanks, Yogi Berra. Yesterday, the legendary baseball player died at age 90. He was known for his catchphrases and his catcher skills - he won 10 championships with the Yankees, and appeared in more World Series games than any other player. He was also a Hall of Famer, named MVP three times, and inspired a cartoon character. And he knew that ‘when you come to a fork in the road, take it’ (yes, that was another ‘Yogi-ism ‘ attributed to him) — Berra became a MLB manager and coach after he retired from the field.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR CO-WORKER STARTS HAVING A LOT OF ‘DENTIST APPOINTMENTS’...

On your way out? Yesterday, reports surfaced that the guy in charge of the US-led coalition against ISIS is stepping down. Retired Marine Gen. John Allen is President Obama’s pick to oversee the fight. But Allen has reportedly felt like he was being micromanaged by the White House, and that he’s never had enough resources to do a good job. Allen’s expected to clear his desk later this year. Great timing, since last week a top military official told Congress that there are  “four or five” US-trained Syrian rebels on the battlefield. The goal was 5,400. Slow clap.  It’s gotten so bad, that the Obama Administration is reportedly considering lowering its standards on which Syrian rebels it should arm in the fight. Because lowering standards is exactly what this conflict needs.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET EVERYONE TO AGREE ON A TIME FOR A BIG MEETING...

Finally. Yesterday, EU ministers agreed on a plan to redistribute 120,000 refugees across member countries.  For months, hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have been making their way from places like the Mideast and Africa to the EU.  Some are fleeing violence in their home countries and some are just looking for more opportunities. Until yesterday, the EU was divided on how to deal with the crisis. Some countries, like Hungary, said they don’t have the resources to deal with the crisis. While Germany and France have been saying ‘ja’ and ‘oui’ to welcoming more people. This plan is progress, but it’s also just a Band-Aid, since the UN estimates hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees will flood the EU over the next year.

WHAT TO BRING UP AT TONIGHT’S FAMILY DINNER…

Drugs. Earlier this week, a drug called Daraprim jumped in price overnight from $13.50 to $750. People — and politicians — were not happy with the CEO who changed the price. Yesterday , the kitchen got a little too hot to stand, and he lowered the price. To how much? Unclear. The drug is used to treat a rare infection, but can also be used as part of cancer and HIV treatments. The price jump was reportedly arbitrary, and part of a trend where companies buy old, cheap drugs and try to sell them as if they’re shiny and new. And then sprinkle good cheer.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THE WAITERS START SINGING ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ IN THE RESTAURANT…

No copyright fees necessary. Anymore.

THING TO KNOW

Pitch Deck: Think: if PowerPoint and ‘the elevator pitch’ had a baby. Starting a company usually means finding investors. Investors and lenders aren’t writing checks without understanding what a company wants to be when it grows up. Enter: your business plan in a PowerPoint.
