QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I’ve accomplished everything in this sport, there’s nothing else to accomplish” – Floyd Mayweather Jr. being modest after winning his 49th straight boxing match over the weekend. He’s retiring. Again.

BLURRED LINES

THE STORY

Yesterday, Germany looked at the number of migrants and refugees coming into the country, said ‘whoa, slow down,’ and then temporarily imposed border controls.

BACK UP.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees have been flooding the EU. They’re coming from places like Africa and the Mideast. Some are fleeing war at home and some are just looking for a better life. It’s been a strain on EU countries, and over the past few months, the crisis has gotten much worse. Pssst: We Skimm’d it for you.

SO WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Germany’s been in a more welcoming mood than everyone else. It has said it will take in 800,000 people by the end of the year. But yesterday, Germany said ‘pump the brakes.’ It’s overloaded with migrants and refugees, and it’s temporarily allowing border patrol to turn away people who don’t have the right paperwork. Meanwhile, the EU is trying to patch together a plan to resettle just 160,000 migrants and refugees across its member states. Leaders are meeting tomorrow to see if they can get everybody on board.

So far, Germany has been captain of the EU welcome committee. But yesterday’s move shows this crisis is moving very quickly, and the continent is having a very hard time coping.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE HORRIFIED BY…

Over the weekend, Egyptian security forces accidentally killed at least 12 tourists and injured 10 others, after mistaking them for militants. The tourists were reportedly traveling in cars that went into a restricted zone. The security forces were chasing “terrorist elements,” and said they thought the cars were being used to carry militants. Some of the tourists were visiting from Mexico. Egypt is now investigating the accident.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GO BACK UPSTAIRS TO MAKE SURE YOUR STRAIGHTENER IS OFF...

Firefighters have enough to worry about right now. California has been dealing with one of the worst wildfire seasons ever, and things were not looking up this weekend. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in some areas after several fires broke out north and east of San Francisco. Thousands of people had to evacuate their homes.  This town was almost totally destroyed. And as if CA didn’t have enough reasons to reach for a tall glass of something, the fires are also putting Napa Valley wineries at risk. Right before harvest season. Not ideal. The conditions are thanks in big part to a years-long drought, which California did something about this year (see: mandatory water restrictions).

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SADDENED BY...

On Friday, a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque in Saudi Arabia, killing 107 people and injuring more than 200. This mosque is in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. A storm caused the crane to collapse. This came just over a week before the hajj – a Muslim pilgrimage that’s expected to bring millions of people to Mecca.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT NFL WEEK 1 ANYMORE...

Tennis, anyone? Yesterday, no. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic beat no. 2 ranked Roger Federer to win the US Open — and his 10th Grand Slam. Now, Federer has Serena’s shoulder to cry on. She was hoping to win the US Open, and with it a calendar-year Grand Slam. But then on Friday, she lost to unranked Italian player Roberta Vinci. Not the plan . In the finals over the weekend, Vinci lost to another Italian: Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta celebrated her first Grand Slam win by announcing her surprise retirement. Because, veni, vidi, vici.

THING TO KNOW

Moses Malone: The 3-time NBA MVP died yesterday at age 60. Malone was the first player to go pro right out of high school. NBD. He played for teams like the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, and the San Antonio Spurs.
