QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo” – The working title of Amy Schumer’s upcoming book, which has an advance of at least $8 million. Alternately titled “The Girl With the Higher Paycheck Than You.”

THINGS GETTING A LOT OF ATTENTION

THE POPE

THE STORY

Yesterday, Pope Francis made Congress cry.

WHAT HAPPENED?

He became the first pope to address a joint meeting of Congress. He quoted MLK Jr., talked about how great America is, and gave lawmakers all the feels. His talking points? Everyone should get along. The US should be more welcoming to immigrants. The death penalty  has to go. And the US needs to pay more attention to  going green. Today, he’s in NYC to ride the popemobile through Central Park and stop by the UN.

This is a historic visit for a historic pope who’s made some historic waves. Yesterday’s speech is one for the history books, and his advice could affect Congress’s policy decisions. Or just make them hug each other more.

THE *: Today, Pope Francis is speaking at the UN General Assembly. He’ll be the one in white. Here’s your Skimm.

CHINA

THE STORY

Today, China is announcing that it wants to go greener. BF environmental D.

EXPLAIN.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is in the US for his first official state visit. And today, he’s expected to announce that China will put a price on carbon emissions. Translation: it will now be more expensive for Chinese companies to pollute. Which might just encourage them to go easier on Mother Earth.

China and the US don’t exactly see eye-to-eye on a lot of things (cough, cybersecurity, cough). But Xi and President Obama both seem to speak green - they’re hoping a commitment from the no. 1 polluter in the world will encourage other countries to shape up ahead of a major climate change summit later this year.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SADDENED BY...

Yesterday’s disaster near Mecca. More than 700 people were killed in a stampede during the hajj pilgrimage outside the Saudi Arabian city. Hajj: an annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city during the Eid al-Adha holiday. It brings literally millions of worshippers to the same place at the same time – which has caused many deadly stampedes in the past. But this incident is by far the worst in years. It also comes just weeks after a crane collapse in Mecca left more than 100 people dead. All of which has many questioning whether Saudi authorities could do more to make sure worshippers are safe.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU YOU GET AN EMAIL THAT YOUR COMPANY’S “MAKING INTERNAL ADJUSTMENTS”...

Ruh-roh. Yesterday, Caterpillar – one of the biggest machinery makers in the world – said it’s cutting 10,000 jobs. The Illinois-based company makes machines for big-time industries like mining, rail, and oil. And in case you missed it, oil prices have been dropping and the world’s second-largest economy (China) has been having a meltdown. This has left Caterpillar machines in lower demand. Now Wall St. is worried  that other major US exporters could follow The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s path. In other business news, Volkswagen is still a mess. But it’s reportedly hiring a new CEO to help clean up the mess.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU REALIZE THE PERSON ON THE STREET IS ACTUALLY WAVING TO SOMEONE BEHIND YOU...

This couldn’t be more awkward. That’s the vibe to expect next week at the UN. Yesterday, it came out that President Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin are going to have a sit down for the first time in more than a year. Think: since right about the time when Putin gave everyone angina after getting a little too comfy in eastern Ukraine . Now, Russia’s meddling more in another international crisis – the Syrian civil war. So there should be lots of fun stuff for the two leaders to talk about. And disagree on. And in other Putin news, yesterday he called up Sir Elton John. Elton’s been shame spiraling ever since last week, when he was punked by two Russian comedians pretending to be Putin. And Elton humble bragged on Instagram about it. Yesterday, the real Putin reportedly told the Rocket Man to ignore to the haters, and that he’d love to have coffee sometime.

THING TO KNOW

LLC vs. Inc: The people who will be most excited to talk about this will be you as a founder, your accountant, and your lawyer. That should tell you how exciting it is. We’re talking a “limited liability corporation”  vs. an “incorporated” company. And all letters are not created equal. Depending on which way you swing could mean different implications on your taxes and what you’re liable for. Another big difference — LLC’s can’t go public, but Inc.’s can.  So if you and your investors dream of ringing that stock bell, embrace the Inc.
