QUOTE OF THE DAY

“An ultrathin invisibility skin cloak for visible light” – Not a Trojan ad. A fancy way of saying ‘Harry Potter’s come to life.’ In a recent study, scientists said they’re developing an invisibility cloak. Ten points for Gryffindor.

THINGS THAT HAD A BAD DAY

SCOTT WALKER

THE STORY

Yesterday, Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) decided it’s time to get off the GOP 2016 party bus. He’s not running for president anymore.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Walker used to be the next big thing in the Republican Party. He’s the one who caused weeks of protests in 2011 over stripping collective bargaining rights for most public employees. This fight led to a vote to recall Walker…which he won. That also won him a gold star from lots of conservatives. But Walker has had a rocky couple of debates and some policy flip-flops, which left him at the bottom of a new poll. Now, he’s packing up his Harley.

Many thought Walker would be one to beat in 2016. Womp. His exit shows how hard it’s been for candidates to keep the campaign cash flowing in a crowded field.

VOLKSWAGEN

THE STORY

Volkswagen’s been having a rough week. And yesterday, its stock caught the VW Bug

WHAT HAPPENED?

Last week, regulators said Volkswagen cheated on emissions tests to make its cars look more environmentally friendly than they really are. VW reportedly lied to the EPA about it, and got away with the shady testing for more than seven years. This bad PR might be the reason VW’s stock took a serious tumble and its investors are reaching for Gas-X.

A damaged rep and falling stock aren’t the only things VW faces. It could be fined up to $18 billion (with a ‘B’) and the US Justice Dept. has opened a criminal probe. Fuel, meet fire.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THERE’S SURGE PRICING…

That’s not ideal. Yesterday, a drug called Daraprim jumped in cost from $13.50 to $750 a pill overnight. The drug – which treats a rare infection but can also be used as part of cancer and HIV treatment – was recently bought by a company called Turing Pharmaceuticals. The drug’s more than 60 years old, but Turing decided it wanted to make a big profit off of it (insert 5,000% price increase here). The move has doctors, patients, and even Hillz up in arms.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

‘Baby Doe.’ Back in June, the body of an unidentified little girl was found in a garbage bag near the Boston Harbor. After a computer-generated image of the girl - who has since been identified as Bella - was put up all over the city, the story got a lot of attention. Last week, her mother and her mother’s boyfriend were identified and then charged in her murder. And yesterday, the couple pleaded not guilty. The boyfriend, who was charged with murder, claims the girl was  possessed by demons. The mother was charged with accessory to murder.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR ROOMMATE TELLS YOU NOT TO EAT RAW COOKIE DOUGH…

These peanuts would be an issue too. Yesterday, the former owner of a peanut company in Georgia was sentenced to 28 years in prison. That’s because his company knowingly shipped peanut butter contaminated with salmonella to customers — causing nine deaths and hundreds of illnesses between 2008-2009 . Contamination at the company (creatively called “Peanut Corporation of America”) led to one of the biggest food recalls ever. And now, it’s led to one of the longest sentences ever for a food recall. ‘Peanut’ would be a good prison name.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOUR FRIEND PRE-ORDERS THE NEW iPHONE…

Just wait for the car. Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal reported that The Fruit is trying to roll out an electric car by 2019, which is earlier than expected. The project is being called “Titan”...because iCar was too basic. This would put Apple in direct competition with Tesla, which is the biggest name in the electric car game. Elon Musk, iWatch your back.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE READING...

This New York Times article. The paper reported that the US military has a long-standing policy of ignoring the sexual abuse of children in Afghanistan. This has always been a problem in the country, especially in rural areas where Afghan commanders have control over entire villages. But the NYT says that American soldiers and Marines have been told not to stop this abuse – even when those Afghan commanders involved are backed by the US, and even when it happens on military bases.  Now, a service member who went against the policy is being forced to leave the Army. Cue a lot of questions about all of this.

THING TO KNOW

UX/UI: Stands for ‘User Experience’ and ‘User Interface.’ Whether you decide to start a company where real people walk in  or people buy from you while in their underwear, you’re going to have to get friendly with tech talk. And these terms stand for how to create a solid customer experience. Good UX/UI is tech speak for ‘customers are doing what you want them to be doing.’ Bad UX/UI is tech speak for ‘lots of angry emails.’
