QUOTE OF THE DAY

“This was an unfortunate mistake” – A local Chicago news station, apologizing for using a Nazi symbol as the graphic for a Yom Kippur story. Challah no.

THINGS SAYING 'OOPS'

US GOV.

THE STORY

Yesterday, the US gov. cleared its throat and said that hackers have stolen the fingerprints of 5.6 million government employees.

SAY WHAT?

Earlier this year, it came out that the Office of Personnel Management – basically the US gov’s HR department – had been hit by one of the biggest data breaches ever. At first, officials thought only one million fingerprints had been stolen. Not the case. Yesterday’s update — that millions more have been swiped – means the personal info of people who  may have federal security clearance (think: Carrie Mathisons) is in the hands of some unknown group. Intelligence officials are pretty, pretty sure the hack came from China.

This comes during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the US. He and President Obama are scheduled to talk cybersecurity. Awkward.

VOLKSWAGEN

THE STORY

Volkswagen has shifted into damage control mode. Yesterday, CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned.

REMIND ME.

Well, VW installed software in 11 million cars that allowed it to cheat on emissions tests. This allowed VW to win environmental gold stars it didn’t deserve. Now, VW’s reputation is taking a major hit, especially since there’s a criminal investigation underway. VW’s board thought this would be a good time to have a chat with now-former CEO Winterkorn...which ended with a ‘k thanks bye.’

Cars are one of Germany’s most important exports and VW is one of Germany’s biggest companies. Meaning this scandal could be a big problem for Europe’s strongest economy. Nein good.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING…

Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Officials there say more than 220 people were killed and at least 450 were injured in a stampede. It happened right outside the holy city of Mecca, where millions of muslims head every year as part of a religious pilgrimage called the hajj. This isn’t the first time the hajj has been dangerous or deadly. Earlier this month, a crane collapse at a mosque in Mecca killed over 100 people. And in the past, stampedes have killed hundreds of people. The hajj is an important ritual that all muslims are supposed to take part in at least once in their lifetime.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU GET OUT OF A LONG WORK MEETING…

Free at last. Yesterday, Egypt’s president woke up and said ‘today’s a good day to pardon prisoners.’ He released 100 of them. People are paying special attention to the release of three Al Jazeera journalists who have been held for two years . Egypt said they broadcasted false news and were part of a terrorist group. But the international community and their lawyers (ahem, Amal Clooney) say the journalists were just doing their job, and Egypt should stop stepping on free speech. Reminder: Egypt hasn’t had the best human rights record, especially after its first democratically elected president was ousted two years ago. And put in a cage . Yesterday’s pardons are seen as a baby step forward for human rights in Egypt. Which is timely, because today the president is traveling to the annual UN world leader prom in NYC.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT…

Patrick Kane. Last month, the Chicago Blackhawks star was accused of rape. Kane has repeatedly said he’s innocent. Yesterday, the case took an “SVU”-like twist. The female accuser’s attorney said the package that was used to hold the rape kit mysteriously showed up on the accuser’s mom’s doorstep. The lawyer says that means someone obviously tampered with the evidence. Meanwhile, police say that they’ve always had the rape kit, including its original packaging, in their possession. But they’re investigating the claim. Everyone else is saying ‘WTF is going on?’

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO LOVES TO USE #BLESSED...

Pope-mania got you too? Yesterday, Pope Francis took over DC. He talked about the Church’s sex abuse scandalclimate changekissed a child, and  made someone a saint . All in a day’s holy work. Today, he’s talking to Congress. And then he heads to NYC for the UN General Assembly. And then maybe Bed Bath & Beyond, we don’t know if he’ll have enough time.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOU FRIEND WHO’S STILL TALKING ABOUT THE NISHA CALL…

Just wait for “Serial” season two. It looks like it’s being packaged with a Bowe

THING TO KNOW

Valuation: How much cash money a company is thought to be worth. Keyword: thought to be. Before you humble brag that you’re worth a gazillion dollars, remember that your company has to actually grow into that value. So make it a real one. You agree on this number when you take on investment or take on a loan so you have a way of saying how much ownership in the company you get for X amount of money.
